Learn the TRUTH
about
Self Defense and Martial Arts
What the So-Called "Experts" Aren't Telling You
There is a major misconception that self defense and martial arts are one and the same. Unfortunately, this misconception is being spread by the very people who claim to be experts on the subject. A large percentage of people who have learned a martial art think that they know how to defend themselves in a real street attack. Sadly, they may find out the hard way that they have been duped.
Don't Believe the Hype!
|
The reality is that there are far more instances of "black belts" getting their lunches packed for them, than there are of those who successfully defended themselves in a real-life street attack.
|
The truth is, about 90% of what is taught today as "martial arts" are all sport oriented. They are designed around a certain set of parameters to meet a specific set of rules. Students are taught from the outset that there is a full range of techniques that are not allowed, and therefore, never learned. Make no mistake about it; when you find yourself fighting for your LIFE, you can't afford to fight CLEAN.
Combative Sports Are Not Self-Defense
Don't get me wrong! I love Combative Sports! They require top-level physical as well as mental toughness. They also make for great entertainment. Remember, combat sports are similar to, and contain some of the same elements as real combat martial arts and self-defense, but that's as far as it goes.
- Combat sports have rules.
- Combat sports take place a specific time and place.
- Combat sports use protective equipment.
- Combat sports allow you to know who your opponent is and have some idea of his level of skill.
- Combat sports ensure that you will have some degree of safety and that you and your adversary will be about the same size.
A crack-head who wants to take your last $10 won't care about any of that. To put it simply, if there are rules, time limits, and protective gear, it isn't really self-defense. It isn't based on reality.
The point is...
You need to decide what you want from a martial art. Do you want to fight in tournaments and win trophies and possibly some prize money? Do you want to be on TV and become famous? That's fine! Find a good school that specializes in Combative Sports, train hard and follow your dreams.
But no matter how brutal it may seem, don't be fooled into thinking that Combative Sports are the same as "real fighting."
No one ever enters an arena
stricken with the fear of death.
Most people have no desire to become the next "Ultimate Fighting Champion." Most people just want to know that they can protect themselves, and the people they care about, from harm. Most people need to learn self defense. Those people would be wasting their time, money and energy by training for a completive sport, because it takes so much hard work to become proficient at it.
So, What's the "Average" Joe (and Josephine) To Do?
If you are like most people, you need to find a school that places very little (if any) emphasis on competitive formats, and focuses solely on self-defense. You can never truly learn to protect yourself where there are rules against "dirty" tactics.
But Beware...
There are just as many problems with schools that say that they teach self defense. It's easy to be fooled if you don't have all the facts. So, before you rush out and throw away your heard-earned money, there are a few things you need to know.
